Arturia Launches MiniFreak 49 Synth with Enhanced Professional Features

Arturia expands its Freak synth series with the MiniFreak 49, featuring 49 semi-weighted keys, upgraded interface, and advanced sound controls for professional use.

Arturia has introduced the MiniFreak 49, a new addition to its Freak line of digital synthesizers known for their distinctive and experimental sound capabilities. While it shares much of its internal architecture with the existing MiniFreak model, the MiniFreak 49 incorporates a number of enhancements aimed at professional musicians seeking more robust playability and control.

A standout change is the inclusion of 49 full-sized, semi-weighted keys, a departure from the MiniFreak's 37 minikeys and the MicroFreak's 25-key touchplate. This keybed upgrade supports more expressive performances, though it offers only monophonic aftertouch instead of the more advanced polyphonic aftertouch feature.

In place of the touchstrips on prior Freak models, the MiniFreak 49 is equipped with traditional aluminum pitch and modulation wheels, facilitating more tactile and familiar real-time control. Its interface boasts a larger LCD display and dedicated controls for the dual sound engines, allowing musicians to adjust each engine independently without toggling between menus.

The synthesizer features over 30 digital oscillator types combined with analog filters, enriched further by the addition of audio-rate filter FM synthesis for more complex sound design. Also preserved is the 256MB of user sample and wavetable storage, a function recently added to the original MiniFreak via firmware update.

A notable new interface element is an XYZ touchpad, which replaces the previous mod matrix’s knob-based controls. This touchpad enhances performance flexibility by allowing users to swipe through presets, manage macros, and manipulate filter parameters fluidly and intuitively.

The MiniFreak 49 is currently available with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $849, though actual market prices may vary. This release marks Arturia's move to blend the quirky, innovative qualities of the Freak series with features tailored for professional musicians.
