Spotify launches paid podcast memberships allowing creators to offer exclusive perks like ad-free listening and early access, keeping 90% of revenue. The feature debuts in 34 global markets, enhancing creator monetization beyond traditional ads.
Spotify has introduced a new paid membership feature for podcasters, providing a fresh revenue stream beyond traditional advertising and bonus episodes. This initiative, revealed initially at Spotify's Investor Day in May 2026, enables podcast creators to offer their audience exclusive perks such as bonus audio or video content, fewer ads, early access to episodes, or a combination of these benefits, tailoring offers to their fans’ preferences.
The membership service is rolling out across 34 markets worldwide, including the United States, reflecting Spotify's ongoing strategy to attract and retain creators amidst competition from platforms like YouTube, especially as Spotify expands into video content. Unlike payments occurring within apps, memberships are purchased directly via the web, where listeners can subscribe, pay, and immediately access the exclusive content from the podcast’s Spotify page.
Podcasters who wish to qualify must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have a minimum of 100 listening or viewing hours, at least 100 listeners or viewers, and have published at least three episodes. Creators will retain 90% of the membership revenue, while they can structure their membership offers with multiple tiers and pricing to engage fans with different levels of interest and commitment.
The initial rollout includes several shows such as “The Adam Friedland Show,” “Making Sense with Sam Harris,” and “Shawn Ryan Show,” among others. YMH Studios is also bringing this membership feature to a dozen shows across its network. This membership model complements Spotify's existing monetization tools like advertising, the Spotify Partner Program, and creator support features including promotions, free trials, and audience analytics.
Further enhancements are planned, with Spotify aiming to introduce membership badges and welcome clips to deepen fan engagement. The paid memberships provide podcasters with a new pathway to generate income and offer fans enriched, exclusive experiences beyond conventional podcast content.
