Google's AI tool AMIE automates patient intake by conversing with patients prior to appointments, enabling doctors to focus more on collaborative care and treatment planning. Ongoing research explores expanded real-time interactions using audio and video.
Google researchers have developed AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer), an artificial intelligence system designed to improve clinical efficiency by managing patient intake before doctor visits. Unlike traditional forms, AMIE engages patients in personalized conversations that gather detailed health information, allowing physicians to dedicate more time to collaborative care and complex treatment decisions.
In a recent study, patients interacted with AMIE via text-based chat, which collected comprehensive clinical histories. AMIE then summarized this information concisely for the attending physicians, who reported that the system helped shift their focus away from gathering baseline data toward engaging more actively with patient concerns and treatment options. A supervising physician monitored all AI-patient interactions to ensure safety but did not need to intervene.
Google scientists Anil Palepu and Mike Schaekermann, key members of the AMIE team, highlight the system's potential to transform the patient experience by eliminating the need for paperwork during urgent care visits. AMIE not only asks targeted follow-up questions based on individual symptoms—for example, specifying exact pain location and duration—but also prepares doctors with richer context, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient management.
Building on these promising results, the research team is expanding AMIE’s capabilities to include audio and video interactions, enabling patients to communicate verbally and share visual information with the AI. Future clinical studies are planned on a broader scale across the United States to rigorously evaluate AMIE’s effectiveness and impact on healthcare workflows.
The researchers express hope that systems like AMIE can restore valuable time to physicians, improve patient engagement, and ultimately contribute to healthier populations. This research project exemplifies Google’s commitment to pioneering AI applications that support medical professionals and enhance healthcare delivery while fostering trust within the medical community.
