Google has introduced Gemini's Personal Intelligence to cars, enabling the AI assistant to use users' data for more personalized responses in Android Auto and Google Built-in systems while allowing users to control data sharing settings.

In 2026, Google expanded its Gemini AI capabilities with a feature called Personal Intelligence, which integrates more of a user's personal data to enhance AI-generated responses. Initially a paid offering, this feature became available to all Gemini users but was not present in automotive settings until recently. Google has now started rolling out Personal Intelligence to vehicles supporting Android Auto and those equipped with Google Built-in infotainment systems.

Personal Intelligence draws upon information from various Google services — including Gmail, Calendar, Search, and Photos — to provide contextually relevant answers and assistive actions without requiring explicit input. For example, a user can ask Gemini to navigate to a doctor’s appointment, and the system can retrieve the appointment details directly from the connected calendar. It can also analyze visual data from photos to help find specific locations, enhancing hands-free user convenience.

Currently, this feature is optional and disabled by default. Users who have previously enabled Personal Intelligence on Gemini will find their settings carried over to their in-car experience. For vehicles with Google Built-in, personal results are only available when the user’s device is connected via Bluetooth. There is an option within the car’s settings to disable Personal Intelligence, providing users control over their data privacy.

The rollout emphasizes ease of interaction while driving, allowing users to focus on the road instead of issuing detailed commands. Google highlights that more context from personal data improves AI output quality, which underscores the importance of reviewing one’s data sharing preferences. Users can manage which data sources Gemini can access by visiting the “Connected Apps” section in the Gemini app settings, where toggles exist for Workspace services, Search, Photos, and more.

Google states it does not use personal data to train Gemini but acknowledges it collects usage inputs and outputs for improvement, some of which may include sensitive information. The company attempts to filter personal data in these interactions but offers no absolute guarantees. The extension of Personal Intelligence to vehicles offers an appropriate moment for users to audit their AI data access settings and adjust them according to their comfort level.

As of October 2026, Personal Intelligence is available in Android Auto and will gradually be introduced to Google Built-in cars over the coming months, marking a significant step in integrating generative AI technology more deeply into automotive user experiences.
