Google introduces Personal Intelligence for its Gemini AI assistant in cars, enabling tailored, hands-free help by accessing users' Google apps like Gmail and Maps while prioritizing privacy and safety.

Google is enhancing its Gemini AI assistant in vehicles with a new feature called Personal Intelligence, now available on Android Auto and soon coming to cars equipped with Google built-in. This update allows Gemini to access a user’s information across various Google apps—including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search—to provide personalized and contextually relevant assistance without requiring drivers to touch their phones.

By opting in and enabling the Personal Intelligence setting, drivers can ask Gemini complex questions naturally. For example, when en route to the airport, a user can inquire about their flight gate and status, and Gemini will retrieve the confirmation email and current updates to provide a consolidated response. Similarly, the assistant can navigate to a doctor’s appointment or find a previously spotted car wash by referencing a saved photo, thereby simplifying tasks that originally required manual searching through apps.

Google emphasizes that privacy is central to this feature. Users must explicitly enable Personal Intelligence, selecting which apps Gemini can access. Additionally, personalized responses are only shared when the phone is connected to the car, ensuring data remains secure. If users choose not to activate Personal Intelligence, they can still use standard functionalities like navigation, music, calls, and general queries, albeit without personalization.

The rollout began on Android Auto as of October 20, 2026, with support for cars featuring Google built-in expected in the following months. This move follows Google’s prior integration of Gemini in Android Auto last year and in cars with Google built-in starting in April 2026. Automakers including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar have adopted Google-built-in systems incorporating native Android apps.

This integration aims to deliver seamless, voice-controlled assistance that leverages personal data securely to reduce distractions and enhance the driving experience. Users maintain full control over data sharing and can toggle Personal Intelligence on or off through Gemini settings at any time. Google’s latest updates affirm its commitment to blending AI convenience with privacy safeguards in automotive environments.
