Airbnb's new policy prohibits hosts from requiring guests to perform chores like stripping beds or washing dishes, upsetting some hosts who see this as undermining the platform's unique personal touch.

In a significant policy update announced in October 2026, Airbnb is limiting the chores that hosts can require from guests during checkout. Effective for bookings made on or after November 20, hosts can no longer mandate that guests strip beds, wash or put away dishes, start laundry, or remove trash from the property.

This move responds to persistent guest complaints about excessive checkout tasks paired with cleaning fees, which many guests felt were unfair and burdensome. Visitors have expressed frustration over social media platforms questioning the logic of paying for cleaning yet being expected to perform cleaning-related duties themselves.

However, the policy change has generated a strong negative reaction from some hosts. Contributors to Airbnb's community forums argue that these basic cleaning responsibilities help maintain hygiene and ease the workload on hosts who must prepare their properties for future guests. A host with twelve years on Airbnb voiced concern that the policy pushes the service toward a hotel-like model, detracting from the personalized hospitality that differentiates Airbnb from traditional hotels. They emphasized that, under the previous system, guests could choose listings aligned to their preferences and take on minor cleaning tasks in exchange for a unique, personal environment.

Despite these concerns, Airbnb has granted certain exceptions to the policy, allowing hosts to request guests conserve water during drought conditions or comply with wildlife-related safety requirements such as using bear-proof trash bins.

This update reflects Airbnb’s ongoing efforts to balance guest satisfaction with host practicality. The company has faced scrutiny in recent years regarding cleaning fee transparency and guest experience. Notably, over 260,000 hosts had reduced or eliminated cleaning fees by 2023, and Airbnb has since implemented clearer display of total prices, including fees, by default in search results worldwide.

The unfolding impact of this policy on host retention and guest attraction remains to be seen. While some hosts have threatened to leave due to feeling overburdened by guests who no longer share cleaning duties, the change may also appeal to travelers seeking convenience without the expectation to contribute to housecleaning despite paying for it. This policy marks another chapter in Airbnb's evolution addressing the complex dynamics between hosts’ operational needs and guests’ comfort and expectations.
