OpenBSD 8.0 arrives with improved security, fresh hardware support including Intel Arc graphics, ARM64 hibernation, and expanded virtualization capabilities.

OpenBSD has launched version 8.0, marking its 61st official release since the project's inception over 30 years ago. Renowned for its strong security posture, OpenBSD founder Theo de Raadt proudly underscored the operating system's impressive record of only two remote vulnerabilities in the default installation over three decades.

This release delivers significant enhancements across hardware support and virtualization. Notably, OpenBSD 8.0 introduces support for Intel's Arc A-Series (DG2/Alchemist) graphics cards, broadening compatibility with contemporary GPUs. The kernel's virtual address space on AMD64 architecture has been substantially increased from 4GB to 512GB, enabling the system to map graphics memory beyond the previous 4GB limit.

ARM64 platforms benefit from newly implemented hibernation features, enhancing power management on these systems. Virtualization capabilities see major improvements, including support for up to 64 virtual CPUs per guest, allowing more robust multi-processor virtual machine configurations.

Additional updates encompass wireless network driver advancements such as 802.11n and 40 MHz channel support for the qwx(4) driver, RISC-V kernel support enhancements including the 'V' vector extension and Advanced Interrupt Architecture, and the introduction of a new RPKI-to-router daemon named rtrd(8).

Security libraries have also been updated, with LibreSSL upgrading to version 4.4.0 and OpenSSH advancing to 10.6, reflecting ongoing efforts to maintain and improve OpenBSD's secure foundation. The virtualization stack involving vmm/vmd has undergone further refinements to improve stability and performance.

One notable change in this release is the discontinuation of support for the Loongson architecture, following complications arising from Clang 22 compiler incompatibility.

Users and developers interested in the full scope of updates and technical details can consult the OpenBSD 8.0 release announcement, which provides a comprehensive overview of the improvements introduced. This release continues OpenBSD's commitment to secure, reliable, and modern computing environments.
