Cloudflare has acquired the Deno startup to strengthen its Workers platform, aiming to make the Workers programming model a mainstream server development approach.

Cloudflare announced on October 10, 2026, that it has acquired Deno, the company behind the Deno programming runtime. This acquisition aims to enhance Cloudflare's Workers programming model and platform, which enables customers to build and run applications on Cloudflare's global network. Kenton Varda, Cloudflare's principal engineer for Workers, highlighted that Deno's recently launched open-source implementation of Workers, known as celld, impressed the Cloudflare team. This aligns with Cloudflare's philosophy of promoting openness and providing developers with flexibility rather than enforcing platform lock-in. Ryan Dahl, Deno’s co-founder and the original creator of Node.js, expressed enthusiasm about the merger, noting that the combined effort will push the Workers programming model toward becoming a mainstream method for server-side development. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Prior to this acquisition, Deno had raised $26 million in funding, including a Series A round led by Sequoia Capital. This move positions Cloudflare to further innovate in edge computing and serverless application development by leveraging Deno’s runtime and its open-source approach.
