Global PC shipments dropped 21% year-over-year in Q3 2026, driven by higher prices for RAM, SSDs, and processors, resulting in decreased demand and limited affordable options for buyers.

Global PC shipments experienced a significant decline in the third quarter of 2026, falling 21 percent compared to the same period last year, according to research from Counterpoint. This downturn marks a sharp reversal after more than two years of continuous growth in the PC market. The decline coincides with a period of increasing prices for key components including RAM, SSDs, and processors from major suppliers such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.

The rising component costs have forced PC manufacturers to raise prices on a wide range of products, spanning from high-end laptops like the MacBook series to smaller, budget-friendly devices such as Raspberry Pi computers. Counterpoint's senior analyst, Minsoo Kang, observed that manufacturers are adjusting strategies by focusing on configurations better able to absorb these inflationary pressures. As a result, consumers face fewer lower-cost options, which is impacting demand among price-sensitive buyers.

Interestingly, some companies have responded to component price hikes by reintroducing older technologies such as DDR4 RAM and 4GB graphics cards. These measures aim to manage costs and offer more affordable alternatives, but have not been sufficient to stabilize shipment volumes.

Additionally, Counterpoint highlights that the third quarter of 2025 included unique purchase spikes driven by customers upgrading ahead of Windows 10 support ending and inventory adjustments related to tariffs. These factors contributed to an exaggerated year-over-year drop when comparing Q3 2026 to the previous year.

The broader consumer electronics market reflected a similar trend, with smartphone shipments hitting their lowest levels in 14 years during the same quarter. This underscores a widespread decline in demand across segments.

Looking ahead, Counterpoint's associate director David Naranjo cautions that the PC market may continue to struggle, projecting a further 27 percent drop in global shipments in Q4 2026 and only a stabilization, rather than a recovery, throughout 2027. This forecast suggests a challenging environment shaped largely by sustained component price inflation and cautious consumer spending.

Overall, the PC industry is facing significant headwinds due to the confluence of rising component costs and shifting market dynamics, with demand affected across multiple device categories. Manufacturers and consumers alike are adjusting to these new cost realities, signaling a period of adjustment and potential consolidation within the market.
