1Password launched '1Password for Agents,' allowing AI assistants to log into users' accounts without revealing passwords, enhancing security and user control over credentials.

As AI agents increasingly act on behalf of users, concerns about the security of shared credentials have grown. Addressing these worries, password management company 1Password unveiled a new tool called '1Password for Agents' on October 22, 2026. This feature enables users to delegate login capabilities to AI assistants securely, ensuring that their private passwords remain undisclosed.

The system operates by establishing a secure communication link among the AI agent, the user, and 1Password. When an AI agent requests access to a user's account, it sends a unique digital key to 1Password to verify its digital identity. Subsequently, the user receives a notification about the login attempt and must personally approve it. Once authorized, 1Password completes the login by filling in the user's credentials on behalf of the AI agent—without ever exposing the actual password.

Users can select from a range of AI agents for this service, including Claude Duet from Anthropic, OpenAI's Dots and ChatGPT Work, Grok Bot, Meta's Muse, and assistants from Town, an AI startup. 1Password also indicated plans to expand partnerships to support more agents.

Highlighting the risks of directly sharing passwords, 1Password's team noted that handing over credentials often results in sensitive information being stored uncontrolled by external services. Their new tool aims to empower users to safely delegate tasks to AI agents while retaining control over their security credentials.

This feature launch coincides with reports of U.S. banks detecting agent-driven activities within customer accounts, reflecting a wider trend of users permitting automated services to handle financial and other personal tasks. Financial institutions have expressed concern over distinguishing legitimate user-authorized agent actions from potential unauthorized access. A spokesperson from Chase Bank cautioned customers against sharing usernames and passwords, reinforcing the importance of tools like 1Password's that safeguard credentials.

With this innovation, 1Password attempts to keep pace with evolving AI usage patterns by providing robust security solutions that balance convenience with user privacy and control.
