Canva introduces Craft, its in-house AI image generator that plans designs before creating images, enabling enhanced precision and control. It generates up to 2K resolution images in over 30 aspect ratios and supports complex design elements.
Canva has unveiled its first proprietary AI image generation model, called Canva Craft, marking a significant step forward in the company's integration of artificial intelligence into design workflows. Unlike conventional image generators that create pictures in a single pass, Canva Craft employs a novel two-stage architecture that first plans the design layout before rendering the final image. This approach aims to deliver increased precision, consistency, and control over the resulting graphics.
Craft is capable of producing images at resolutions up to 2,000 pixels and supports more than 30 different aspect ratios, catering to a wide range of creative needs. While it is optimized for social media content and marketing materials, the model also excels at generating realistic scenes, digital art, environmental imagery, and other complex digital compositions. Canva highlights that its two-step generation process is particularly effective for images requiring legible textual content and exact object placement.
The AI model was trained on millions of human-made templates from Canva's vast content library, which includes presentations, infographics, menus, and social media posts. This extensive training data enables Craft to align closely with professional design standards and user expectations. According to Design Arena’s leaderboard, which ranks AI image generation models based on community feedback, Canva Craft currently holds the fourth position, trailing behind OpenAI's GPT-Image variants.
Canva commits to responsible AI usage, embedding robust moderation for both inputs and outputs, privacy safeguards, safety features, and mechanisms to report improper content. Future plans include enabling integration of AI agents via the open Model Context Protocol and releasing more compute-efficient versions of the model, named Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast.
Users worldwide can access Canva Craft immediately through Canva’s interface by selecting the Dream Lab option from the menu. This launch builds upon Canva's earlier AI advances this year, which introduced prompt-based editing and layer-based modifications for generated images, further enhancing user creative control.
Canva’s Craft model represents a fresh competitive entry in the AI image generation space, positioning itself alongside offerings from industry leaders such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google by emphasizing design planning and precision generation capabilities.
