At TechCrunch Disrupt, startup founders and VC experts emphasized that startups don’t need to go viral to win customers, highlighting tailored influencer marketing, traditional sales, and deep customer understanding as key to growth and retention.
Winning early customers can be a daunting challenge for startups, and maintaining those relationships is equally crucial. At the recent TechCrunch Disrupt event, travel startup Engine’s founder Elia Wallen, Gamma CEO Grant Lee, and Google Ventures partner Crystal Huang shared insights on effective customer acquisition and retention in today’s competitive landscape.
Despite the hype around social media driving quick growth, Lee explained that successful influencer marketing requires more than simply providing a platform for promotion. Gamma, known for its AI-powered presentation software, achieved significant scale through a carefully crafted ambassador program before influencer marketing was widespread among smaller companies. However, Lee stressed that understanding and targeting distinct customer segments is key, as generic creator outreach can easily fall flat without strategic alignment.
In contrast, Wallen’s experience with Engine, which reached $150 million in bookings primarily through bootstrapping and without a notable social media presence, highlights the continuing relevance of traditional methods. Relying on direct outreach like phone calls and in-person events—including unconventional tactics such as hiring a magician to attract attendees—Engine successfully engaged clients beyond digital channels, illustrating that old-school personal connections remain powerful.
Huang pointed out that after attracting customers, carefully analyzing product usage data to identify retention patterns and referrals is vital. Cultivating "super fans" who genuinely love the product and actively promote the brand can create organic growth and loyalty. Successful startups, she emphasized, develop passionate evangelists committed to sustaining and growing the user base.
Together, the speakers underscored that while social media and influencer strategies can boost visibility, they are not substitutes for targeted outreach, product value, and deep customer relationships. Startups should combine modern marketing with traditional sales and user engagement tactics to foster sustainable growth and long-term customer loyalty.
