Amazon has renamed its Kindle Unlimited subscription to Kindle Plus, enhancing it with expanded audiobook access including AI-narrated 'virtual voice' options alongside traditional human narration, while maintaining the same unlimited ebook borrowing model at $11.99 monthly.
Amazon has announced a significant update to its popular ebook subscription service by rebranding Kindle Unlimited as Kindle Plus. This change preserves the core offering of unlimited access to a curated selection of ebooks, comics, and magazines from Amazon's Kindle catalog for a monthly fee of $11.99.
A notable enhancement in Kindle Plus is the expanded availability of audiobooks. Subscribers will continue to enjoy audiobooks that sync with ebooks, enabling seamless transitions between reading and listening without losing their place. However, Amazon now includes thousands of additional audiobooks narrated by AI-generated "virtual voices," allowing subscribers to experience new titles with artificial intelligence narration at no extra cost.
Amazon spokesperson Josh Pflug confirmed to The Verge that Kindle Plus users gain access to "millions of titles, now with the addition of thousands of audiobooks in the U.S. catalog" wrapped into the existing subscription price. This update reflects a growing trend among subscription services to adopt the "+ Plus" branding and augment offerings with AI capabilities.
Kindle Plus remains a standalone subscription service distinct from Amazon Prime and maintains the borrowing limit of up to 20 titles concurrently, with no return deadlines. In addition, Amazon is enabling authors using its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform to make their audiobooks accessible to Kindle Plus subscribers. New audiobooks enrolled in KDP Select will automatically include AI narration, while authors can also opt in to convert their previously published works.
For those authors favoring traditional narration, audiobooks produced via Amazon's Audible Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX) marketplace are also now available within Kindle Plus, though initially limited to subscribers in the United States. Amazon plans to extend this availability to other global markets over time, signaling a broader push to innovate digital reading experiences.
This transformation of Kindle Unlimited into Kindle Plus with AI-narrated audiobooks exemplifies Amazon's investment in blending technology and publishing, aiming to offer enhanced convenience and variety to readers and authors alike.
