Google.org is investing $2.5 million to help the World Bank Group expand an AI-powered digital infrastructure, enabling 1 million farmers in multiple regions to access essential agricultural services via a unified platform.
Google.org has committed $2.5 million to aid the World Bank Group’s effort to enhance digital public infrastructure for agricultural services worldwide. This collaboration aims to empower 1 million farmers by the end of 2027 through improved access to vital resources and services. The initiative builds on the World Bank Group’s AgriConnect program, supporting the International Finance Corporation and other entities within the Bank to provide greater digital connectivity for farmers.
Central to this effort is the rollout of the Open Network for Agriculture (ONA), an AI-enabled platform designed to integrate multiple service providers into a single digital ecosystem. With ONA, farmers can avoid the complexity of managing multiple disconnected applications and instead use one platform for a range of essential services. These include digital farmer identities, access to credit, direct subsidy payments, marketplaces to trade produce, and voice-assisted guidance on farming techniques, weather forecasts, pricing, and financial matters in local languages.
This initiative follows a successful pilot program conducted in India and plans to expand across regions such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. By building this shared digital infrastructure, ONA acts like "public roads" for online services, facilitating smoother interactions between farmers and both public and private sector service providers.
The collaboration between Google.org and the World Bank Group reflects a broader alliance aimed at accelerating digital transformation in emerging markets. This partnership leverages Google.org’s expertise in technology and philanthropy along with the World Bank’s development experience to bring innovative, scalable solutions to farmers who often face barriers in accessing agricultural services.
If successful, this approach could significantly improve agricultural productivity, enhance farmer incomes, and enable more resilient livelihoods in diverse farming communities globally. The use of AI-powered tools and unified digital platforms represents a significant step toward inclusive, technology-driven agricultural development.
