Spotify now requires family plan members to scan a QR code on the plan manager's device within seven days to verify they share a residence, aiming to enforce household-based subscriptions and reduce unauthorized sharing.

Spotify is reinforcing its policies on Family and Duo subscription plans by introducing a new QR code verification step for users. According to Ars Technica and Music Business Worldwide, subscribers on family plans must now scan a QR code on the primary plan holder's device in person to confirm they share the same physical address, as required by Spotify's terms. This verification must occur within seven days to avoid losing access to the Premium tier and face a 12-month ban from joining any other Family or Duo plan.

This move addresses Spotify's longstanding rule that members under family plans must reside at the same address. While this seems reasonable, it can affect families with members living apart, such as college students or traveling spouses. The policy shift is seen as a way for Spotify to curb unauthorized plan sharing among friends who were not originally intended beneficiaries of these discounted group subscriptions.

Goldman Sachs analysts highlighted that a significant portion of family plan users are actually friends sharing accounts to save costs. Their October 2026 "Music in the Air: 10 Years On" report suggests stricter enforcement could generate additional revenue, as individual user monetization within family plans is substantially lower compared to individual plans. Similar enforcement actions have been undertaken by streaming video services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+, which have also tightened account sharing policies and raised prices with positive financial outcomes.

Spotify's new QR code check aligns with industry trends aiming to safeguard subscription revenue and address widespread account sharing. Subscribers who cannot complete the QR code scan risk being relegated to Spotify's free tier and restricted from future discounted multi-user plans for a year. This change may prompt some users to reconsider their streaming options or return to legacy music players.

Overall, Spotify's enhanced verification process represents a notable tightening of family plan eligibility, reflecting a broader shift in the streaming industry to increase monetization through stricter access controls and pricing strategies.
