Developers are creating creative apps tailored for Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo, leveraging its dual-screen setup and larger inner display for enhanced entertainment, productivity, and gaming.
Apple’s recently launched iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable smartphone, is inspiring a wave of innovative app development that takes advantage of its unique dual-display and folding design. The device features an inner screen 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and an outer screen, both sharing the same aspect ratio for seamless app transitions.
Developers worldwide have optimized their apps to utilize the foldable form factor, introducing fresh experiences for entertainment, productivity, gaming, creativity, and more. Early standouts include Netflix, which allows users to scroll through short-form “Clips” on the outer display before unfolding the device to watch full shows on the larger inner screen, providing a smooth content flow.
Indie developer Vidit Bhargava's Deck-Man app (formerly Duo-Man) transforms the Duo into a retro cassette player with dual-screen controls, combining nostalgia with a unique physical interaction that only a foldable device can offer. Similarly, TypeDraw mimics a virtual notebook where users can write in their handwriting or various fonts, enhancing the experience with animations that evoke the feel of a real journal.
The fitness app Wakeout adapts its interface dynamically depending on the Duo's position—closed, open, or tent mode—optimizing for on-the-go mini-workouts. Flighty, an Apple Design Award-winning travel app, utilizes the expanded screen to display detailed flight maps and implements a dedicated flight-tracking mode ideal for tent mode on a tray table.
Other apps bringing distinct experiences include Tiny Computers, which emulates classic computers playable on the Duo's open "laptop" mode; Sky Guide, offering immersive stargazing on the large display; and MD Vinyl, a music player showcasing a spinning vinyl record with tactile controls.
The foldable design also benefits practical use cases, as seen with NYT Cooking's detailed recipe displays in partial fold mode and enhanced shopping experiences in apps like LTK and Lowe's. Business and productivity apps such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Slack, and Fantastical exploit Split View and expanded screen estate to enable true multitasking on iPhone.
Apple has supported developers with dedicated APIs and tools in iOS 27.1 SDK for adapting layouts across the fold, managing hinge state, and using dual displays simultaneously. More than 2,000 developers have engaged in worldwide workshops to optimize existing apps and create novel experiences tailored for iPhone Duo.
Sales of the iPhone Duo began on October 23, 2026, starting at $1,999. Apple highlights an evolving App Store collection showcasing "Made for iPhone Duo" apps, anticipating many more apps to follow as the foldable device seeds new usage patterns. Early reception praises the creativity unlocked by the foldable format, marking a fresh chapter in Apple's mobile device ecosystem.
