Apple's iOS 27.2 update enhances Siri AI with new beta languages and memory capabilities, introduces Apple Pencil support for the foldable iPhone Duo, adds FaceTime and Podcast app improvements, and patches over 160 security vulnerabilities.
Apple has officially released iOS 27.2 for iPhones and iPads, bringing a range of new features and significant security enhancements. Among the headline changes is expanded language support for Siri's AI assistant, now available in beta for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. With this update, Siri can better recall details from past interactions, enabling more personalized and context-aware responses. This memory function extends to information sourced from photos in Messages, calendar attendees, voicemails, Safari browsing history, and reading lists, while allowing users to exclude specific apps from this memory feature.
The update also addresses the foldable iPhone Duo, which has encountered display issues since launch. iOS 27.2 adds Apple Pencil compatibility to the foldable model for apps such as Notes and Preview, enhancing input options. Additionally, it introduces an 'Edge Light' effect to improve face highlighting during video calls.
FaceTime receives several enhancements with new capabilities including Dual Capture, which allows simultaneous streaming from the front and rear cameras during group calls. The update also supports adding third-party sign language interpreters or live captioners to calls, improving accessibility.
More practical features include message suggestions for reminders and calendar events, plus the ability to edit captions or add comments in Shared Albums, which now also remind users of album expiration dates. The Podcasts app has been refreshed to better display new episodes from subscribed shows and track episodes currently being listened to.
Sports fans gain the new Multiview feature on iPhone, enabling viewing up to four live sports streams at once on Apple TV. This feature supports events like Major League Soccer, Formula 1 in the U.S., and Major League Baseball doubleheaders, offering multiple concurrent feeds during broadcasts.
Importantly, iOS 27.2 contains over 160 security fixes. Many were backported to older iOS 26 versions, still used by approximately 80% of iPhone owners. A notable security patch was also backported to iOS 18 users, addressing a vulnerability reportedly exploited in sophisticated attacks targeting specific individuals on iOS versions prior to 27. Apple provided no further details about the attackers, a standard practice when patches relate to government-level spyware or forensic tools.
Overall, iOS 27.2 represents a significant update focused on AI integration, device usability enhancements, and robust security improvements across Apple's mobile operating system.
