Telia and Ericsson have moved 6G development beyond labs by launching field trials in Sweden, aiming to commercialize 6G by 2030-2032 with a focus on AI-ready, secure communications infrastructure.
Swedish telecom operator Telia and network equipment giant Ericsson have taken a significant step in advancing 6G technology by commencing field trials beyond laboratory environments. This collaborative effort aims to position Sweden as a leader in next-generation mobile communication systems anticipated to emerge commercially between 2030 and 2032.
The ongoing research focuses on developing AI-capable infrastructure designed to meet societal and business needs, potentially enhancing security and competitiveness nationwide. Anders Olsson, head of Telia Sweden, highlighted that these 6G advancements are guided by practical demands from society and industry sectors, emphasizing secure and competitive digital equipment.
The field trials include comprehensive testing of coverage, signal quality, uplink capacity, reliability, and latency—all critical parameters for emerging 6G standards. Ericsson is specifically exploring technologies operating in the upper 6GHz frequency band, which is expected to play a central role in 6G networks. Future tests are also planned to evaluate performance in both the 6GHz and 600MHz bands.
Patrick Johansson, Ericsson's head of EMEA, noted the Nordic countries' reputation as early adopters of new mobile technologies and affirmed that the company's partnership with Telia continues this trend. This cooperation follows their joint NorthStar program launched in 2023, which focused on enhancing 5G capabilities for industrial and enterprise applications. Earlier this year, they expanded their collaboration into 6G research through the Digital Arena Sweden research initiative.
Telia and Ericsson's 6G development benefits from extensive collaborations with industrial partners, academic institutions, and the public sector to ensure a comprehensive innovation ecosystem. These efforts aim not only to advance technology but also to underpin Sweden's strategic ambition in leading secure, AI-ready digital infrastructure on the global stage.
