Telefonica and Portuguese operator NOS have begun collaborating to develop military and defense uses of 5G technology, demonstrating capabilities in autonomous drone and vehicle operations during joint exercises.
Telefonica and NOS Comunicacoes, a Portuguese telecommunications operator, have initiated a partnership focusing on harnessing 5G technology for military and defensive applications. This collaboration was publicly showcased through a demonstration involving unmanned drones and vehicles, highlighting the potential of 5G infrastructure in supporting autonomous and secure defense operations.
The demonstration took place during the Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems event, where the two companies combined their 5G technologies. Telefonica emphasized that this exercise validated their shared infrastructure's ability to offer new services and applications tailored for defense contexts.
Formalizing their cooperation, Telefonica and NOS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at jointly developing future connectivity solutions, secure communication channels, and digital services suitable for defense and security sectors. A critical objective is ensuring network interoperability to facilitate coordinated operations across national borders, responding to evolving security challenges.
Beyond network compatibility, the partnership plans to explore the integration of edge computing, artificial intelligence, and innovative 5G architectures. Special attention will be given to aligning these technologies with command-and-control systems and autonomous platforms, enhancing operational effectiveness.
Javier Lopez Gutierrez, director of defense and security at Telefonica Espana, highlighted the project's significance in reinforcing European sovereignty and commended the support from both the Spanish and Portuguese navies, which provided essential environments for testing and evaluating these technologies.
The agreement culminates after approximately a year of discussions, signaling a strategic move by the two telecom players to pioneer advanced defense solutions leveraging 5G. By focusing on secure, interoperable, and cutting-edge digital infrastructures, Telefonica and NOS aim to address the dynamically changing landscape of national and regional security.
