E Ink announced its Kaleido 4 color e-paper technology, delivering better color gamut, contrast, and faster refresh rates than previous versions, set to debut in Hanvon's M10C II tablet.

E Ink has introduced the next generation of its color e-paper display technology, named Kaleido 4, which represents an upgrade over the current Kaleido 3 screens used in many e-readers and tablets.

Kaleido technology achieves color displays by placing a color filter over a black-and-white e-paper panel, unlike E Ink's Gallery 3 technology which uses colored pigments directly. While Kaleido offers faster refresh rates, its color rendition has traditionally been limited by a lower resolution and a narrower, somewhat desaturated palette – capable of displaying 4,096 colors, much fewer than modern LCD or OLED displays capable of millions. Moreover, previous Kaleido screens often rendered text darker and less crisp due to the color filter.

The new Kaleido 4 displays aim to address these limitations. E Ink claims Kaleido 4 doubles the "color gamut volume" relative to Kaleido 3, enhancing overall color vibrancy. It improves white reflectance by 15% and boosts contrast by 50%, which should make black text appear clearer and less muddy than before. These improvements promise a more satisfying reading experience on color e-paper.

Performance-wise, Kaleido 4 benefits from a new oxide TFT backplane technology – similar to what's used in Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft – enabling refresh rates up to 18 frames per second. This is a significant jump, allowing for smoother screen updates and even video playback, overcoming the sluggish refresh rates seen in E Ink's Gallery 3 panels.

While major device manufacturers like Amazon and Kobo have yet to announce new products utilizing Kaleido 4, Hanvon Technology is set to be the first adopter. Their upcoming M10C II tablet, aimed at the Chinese market, will feature a Kaleido 4 display combined with a micro-etched tempered glass surface to minimize glare and provide a more paper-like feel during note-taking with its battery-free stylus.

Overall, E Ink’s Kaleido 4 represents an important step forward for color e-paper technology, improving color reproduction, image contrast, and refresh speed, potentially broadening the appeal of color e-readers and tablets for reading, note-taking, and multimedia applications.
