Spotify unveiled its first fully native in-car app for Android Automotive OS, debuting in select Audi models. The app runs directly on the car's infotainment system, eliminating the need for phone tethering or Bluetooth and offering a richer user experience.
Spotify has introduced its first fully native in-car application built directly on Google’s Android Automotive operating system, marking a significant shift away from reliance on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection systems. Announced on October 21, 2026, and launching initially in select Audi models—including the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, as well as the gasoline A5, Q5, and A6—this standalone app operates directly on the vehicle’s infotainment hardware.
Previously, Spotify’s integration with Android Automotive functioned as a "headless" service, delivering music and backend data but utilizing Google's interface templates. The new app, however, is "headful," allowing Spotify to fully control and render the user interface independently, delivering a completely branded experience. Jonathan Tarlton, Spotify’s automotive business development lead, emphasized that with this approach, Spotify "owns the user experience" and is not limited by external templates.
By running natively on the car's systems, the app removes dependency on phone tethering, Bluetooth connections, or auxiliary cables. This aims to provide faster startup times and a more seamless experience, addressing common frustrations like unreliable wireless connections or delays during "cold starts." Moreover, the app enables enhanced features such as a "Spotify Jam" mode, where passengers can join a shared queue via QR code, along with support for secondary passenger displays that show lyrics, video content, and browsing capabilities without distracting the driver.
Spotify is not abandoning CarPlay or Android Auto but views this native app as a complementary option, expanding user choice. With roughly 34 percent of Spotify’s monthly active users and 77 percent of Premium subscribers streaming music in cars, Spotify sees the vehicle infotainment system as a crucial platform for content delivery.
The deployment strategy focuses on leveraging the standardized Android Automotive APK to avoid fragmentation across automakers. Spotify plans to distribute the app through multiple channels, including the Google Play Store and manufacturer-specific app stores like Audi’s Application Store, fostering an open ecosystem for automotive apps.
This launch represents a key industry development as automakers increasingly adopt Android Automotive OS, providing app developers direct access to vehicle infotainment systems. For users, the native Spotify app promises improved reliability, integrated features, and a tailored in-car audio experience independent of their smartphone’s interface.
