Apple introduces a touchscreen MacBook Pro featuring a vibrant OLED panel, Dynamic Island integration, and a lighter design, marking a notable evolution despite retaining its traditional form factor.
Apple has introduced a new MacBook Pro model that incorporates a touchscreen for the first time, paired with a high-quality OLED display. In a hands-on session at a recent event in Los Angeles, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro was noted to be lighter than its predecessor, which contained the M1 Max chip. The weight improvement is perceptible, though the laptop remains within the same general weight category.
A prominent addition to the screen is the Dynamic Island—a feature previously exclusive to iPhones—visible as a small cutout at the top that can dynamically resize to show live information. Unlike the larger notch seen in prior MacBook Pros, this cutout has minimal impact on the overall display area, though questions remain regarding its effect on fullscreen gaming experiences.
The touchscreen functionality supported various gestures familiar to macOS users, including multi-finger swipes between desktop spaces, pinch-to-zoom on images and maps, window manipulation via dragging and resizing, file dragging between applications, and video scrubbing. Additionally, creative interactions such as finger painting and 3D model coloring were demonstrated, offering some advantages over traditional trackpad input. However, this MacBook Pro does not support Apple Pencil input nor does it convert into a tablet form factor, maintaining the classic clamshell design.
The standout feature, according to the hands-on review, is the OLED display itself. It delivers exceptional peak brightness, perfect blacks, balanced color accuracy, and impressive dynamic range—representing a marked upgrade over the previous MiniLED displays used in MacBook Pros. This improvement in screen quality aligns with Apple’s high standards and the premium nature of the device.
Another notable nostalgic touch is the return of the glowing Apple logo on the back of the laptop’s lid. While some view this as outdated, it adds an element of familiarity and style.
Pricing begins at around $5,799 for a 16-inch model equipped with the M5 Max chip, 64 GB of RAM, and 2 TB of storage. Higher memory configurations, such as 128 GB of RAM, add significantly to the price, aiming to meet the demands of professionals potentially utilizing resource-intensive local AI workflows.
In summary, Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro integrates modern display technology and useful touch input without deviating from the familiar laptop experience. It combines advanced hardware features with a premium price point, emphasizing quality and productivity enhancements rather than a radical redesign.
