Google Play has announced the selected recipients of its first-ever Indie Games Fund in Africa for 2026, committing $1 million in non-dilutive funding to support 10 independent game studios across Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative aims to bridge the funding gap, overcome distribution barriers, and elevate the continent’s rich storytelling and creativity to global audiences. Each selected studio will receive financial support alongside direct access to mentorship from Google Play specialists and tailored technical assistance from Unity. This comprehensive backing is intended to help studios optimize their titles, grow sustainably, and share authentic African narratives and gameplay.
The ten chosen studios hail from Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya, representing diverse genres ranging from action platformers and puzzle games to rhythm and simulation titles. Among them, South Africa’s Clockwork Acorn offers Jetstream, a minimalist puzzle guiding a plane through over 100 hand-crafted levels, while Nigerian Deluxe Entertainment Studios develops Rasta Santa, an action platformer set in Lagos tackling trafficking themes. South Africa’s Disputed People creates Mitts and the Divine Recipes, a 3D adventure involving cooking and puzzle-solving in a cozy world.
Other highlighted titles include Nigeria’s Fer Factor with Chore Master, a calming cleaning game; Gazuntype Entertainment’s Go North, a story-driven exploration adventure; Ghana’s Leti Games’ Sweave, a rhythm-based mobile game inspired by traditional weaving; and Nigeria’s Maliyo Games’ Safari City, a vibrant puzzle-renovation experience. South African Studio Bo contributes Idle Sands, a 2D idle-clicker, while Vetkoek Studios captures the unique chaos of South African minibus taxis in Taxi Ranked. Kenyan Weza Interactive rounds out the lineup with Riziki, a free-to-play rhythm adventure featuring Afrobeats and other African music genres.
Google Play’s program represents one of the most significant investments to date in Africa’s burgeoning game development ecosystem, which it describes as vibrant and growing rapidly. By combining funding with mentorship and technical support, the Indie Games Fund seeks to empower local developers not only to launch successful games but also to evolve into sustainable companies with worldwide reach. This initiative underscores the increasing global recognition of African creativity and cultural richness in gaming.
As these studios develop their projects with Google Play’s backing, players around the world can anticipate fresh, culturally authentic gaming experiences that showcase the unique stories and artistry emerging from the African continent. The selected studios reflect a range of innovative approaches, promising an exciting future for African indie games on the global stage.
