Readwise introduces Readwise Books in beta, a new ebook platform combining social features, reading tracking, and book purchasing, aiming to rival Kindle and Goodreads with enhanced user engagement and aesthetics.
Readwise, known for its tools assisting power readers by organizing Kindle highlights and managing saved articles, has launched a beta platform called Readwise Books. This new app integrates ebook purchasing, reading, and social interaction in one place, aiming to enhance the digital reading experience beyond existing options. Available by invitation or to current Readwise subscribers, Readwise Books offers a visually appealing interface and unique features that distinguish it from competitors like Kindle and Goodreads.
Co-founders Tristan Homsi and Daniel Doyon describe Readwise Books as "Strava for reading," drawing parallels to the fitness app by tracking detailed reading metrics such as duration, speed, and amount read. Users can view and share this data with friends on the platform, promoting a social reading culture through a homepage feed filled with comments, recommendations, and community interactions.
The idea for Readwise Books dates back to the company's inception, with the founders aiming to improve upon Kindle's functionality and create a superior alternative to Goodreads, which has widely been criticized for its user experience. Readwise Books lets users track books they want to read, are reading, or have finished, and supports synchronization with Kindle accounts by allowing users to capture starting and ending pages through photographs.
Crucially, Readwise has secured agreements with all five major US publishers, enabling it to offer a broad and competitively priced ebook library. This effort involved extensive negotiations around security, digital rights management, and sales conditions, allowing Readwise Books to compete fairly with established platforms. The app runs on an Android-based system compatible with devices using E Ink technology, including newer models like Xteink and Boox Palma, enabling flexibility without the need to manufacture dedicated e-readers presently.
Early user experiences highlight Readwise Books" appealing design, customizable reading options, and engaging tracking features that encourage reading rather than distract. Although some bugs and partial Kindle integration complexities remain, the platform presents a compelling alternative for digital readers. The challenge of switching from entrenched Kindle ecosystems is acknowledged, with plans to ease this transition by syncing notes and reading progress.
Looking forward, the founders are optimistic that increased interest in deep reading, partially motivated by concerns over AI dependency, will drive users toward Readwise Books. Its social and interactive features offer a novel space where readers can connect and engage more meaningfully with literature than on existing platforms. As Readwise Books enters the digital reading market, it signals a notable evolution in how ebooks are consumed and shared online.
