TikTok introduces 'Must Eat,' a curated guide for restaurant recommendations using millions of user posts, featuring direct booking via OpenTable in select US cities.
TikTok is expanding beyond social media content to enter the restaurant recommendation space, traditionally dominated by platforms like Yelp and Google Maps. It has launched 'Must Eat,' a new feature that aggregates insights from over 40 million posts, reviews, and comments shared on TikTok to create curated lists of dining establishments.
Must Eat organizes restaurants into two main categories: Everyday Eats, which highlights popular casual dining spots recommended by users, and Elevated Dining, focusing on venues suited for special occasions or celebrations. By tapping into its extensive user-generated content, TikTok aims to offer a fresh approach to discovering local eateries.
An additional convenience comes from the integration of OpenTable, allowing users to book restaurant reservations directly within the TikTok app. Currently, this feature is available in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Must Eat is accessible through TikTok Go, a segment within TikTok dedicated to travel and local experiences. Users can find the restaurant guide via the app’s search bar, Local feed, points-of-interest pages, and video location tags linked to listed restaurants.
This move aligns TikTok's strategy to enhance user engagement by embedding practical services alongside entertainment, positioning itself as a broader lifestyle platform. While the feature presently serves a limited number of US cities, its introduction signals TikTok's intent to compete with established restaurant recommendation and booking services using its unique community-driven content.
