Google expands its AI-powered Search ads internationally, introducing new Gemini-based formats alongside a slowdown in core Search advertising growth, aiming to unlock fresh revenue streams and enhance ad relevance with conversational and personalized features.

Google is extending its AI-powered advertising formats within Search to international markets, marking a significant push to offset decelerating growth in its traditional Search ad business. This initiative coincides with Alphabet’s third-quarter 2026 earnings announcement, where the parent company reported a 25% revenue increase year over year, reaching $127.6 billion. Despite this overall growth, Google Search advertising revenue experienced a slowdown, climbing 12% compared to 17% in the previous quarter and 19% in the first quarter.

Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, highlighted this strategic expansion during Alphabet’s earnings call. He noted that AI Mode ads are now scaling across more users and queries worldwide, introducing multi-turn ads and extending AI Mode monetization beyond the U.S. for the first time. Early indicators suggest these new ad formats are effective, with click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode matching those of organic results. User research also points to high ad relevance, underscoring favorable consumer reception.

Building on May 2026’s introduction of Gemini-powered advertising formats, Google’s AI-enabled ads now include Conversational Discovery ads that directly engage users by answering specific questions, and Highlighted Answers that weave relevant ads into AI-generated suggestions. These formats incorporate independent AI explainers that transparently provide product or service context alongside advertiser content, improving trust while clearly marking sponsored placements.

Additionally, Google is launching AI-powered Shopping ads, which leverage Gemini to showcase tailored product selections with custom explanations, aiming to simplify purchasing decisions for complex items. Another feature, Business Agent for Leads, embeds a conversational brand agent within ads, enabling interactive customer engagement and lead generation through instant, AI-driven responses sourced from a business’s website.

Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that AI is transforming search behavior, with AI Mode queries tripling in length compared to standard searches and incorporating multimodal inputs such as voice and images. The platform now handles over 50 billion visual searches monthly, reflecting a significant shift toward more personalized and varied search patterns.

Complementing these developments, Google continues to enhance its Direct Offers pilot by enabling a broader array of promotions, native checkout integrations, and expanding travel-related deals to facilitate real-time, AI-assisted purchasing. Advertisers are encouraged to prepare for these innovations by deploying Performance Max and AI Max campaign tools to maximize reach and effectiveness.

As Alphabet’s Google Services division reports $96.3 billion in revenue with an 11% growth year over year and Google Cloud revenue surging 103% to $30.7 billion, the expansion of AI-driven Search ads represents a critical avenue for sustaining advertising momentum amid evolving search dynamics. This strategic focus reflects Google's confidence in generative AI to create more engaging, transparent, and effective advertising experiences worldwide.
