Amazon's new Echo Studio with Home Camera combines high-quality audio with a 13MP camera, enabling smarter interactions and remote home monitoring for $250.
Amazon has expanded its Echo Studio smart speaker lineup by introducing the Echo Studio with Home Camera, a device that integrates a 13-megapixel camera alongside its acclaimed audio features. This new model, unveiled in October 2026, builds on the Echo Studio’s reputation for superior sound quality while adding novel visual and interactive capabilities.
The Echo Studio with Home Camera retains the same audio hardware as the original Echo Studio, including a 3.75-inch high-excursion woofer and three full-range drivers, supporting Dolby Atmos and Amazon’s surround sound algorithms. It also features lossless HD audio and Advanced Room Adaptation technology, which dynamically tunes the sound to the acoustics of the space. Both versions utilize the AZ3 Pro processor with an AI accelerator designed for Amazon’s Alexa+ generative AI chatbot.
The key innovation is the built-in 13MP camera, which allows the speaker to "see and understand what’s in front of the camera." This visual input enables several enhanced functions: the device can track the user's location within the room to adjust audio volume accordingly, ensuring consistent sound as they move. Additionally, it serves as a smart camera for remote home monitoring, letting users check in on pets or household situations.
Amazon positions the camera-equipped speaker as an interactive assistant that can recognize objects and provide real-time help. For example, Alexa+ can explain board game rules after seeing the game box or identify a cereal brand to facilitate reordering through Amazon. There is also mention of future plans to support video calls by pairing the device with Amazon Fire TV, although no timeline was given.
Regarding privacy, Amazon emphasizes user control and transparency. A dedicated button disables both microphones and the camera, and a built-in LED indicator signals when the camera is active. Users can also disable the camera remotely via the Alexa mobile app and continue using voice features without video. The standard Echo Studio without a camera remains available for those who prefer not to have a built-in camera.
Amazon’s history with smart cameras is marked by privacy controversies, including law enforcement access to Ring camera data and an FTC settlement over employee spying allegations. These incidents could influence consumer trust and adoption.
Priced at $250, the Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $30 more than its camera-free counterpart, reflecting the added hardware and capabilities. This launch is part of Amazon’s broader push to evolve Alexa from a costly service into a powerful AI-driven tool that supports advanced tasks and encourages purchases through Alexa+ integrations.
