The European Union’s 6G initiative funds five projects with €22 million to advance AI-native 6G networks, connected devices, and international collaboration, aiming to secure Europe's role in future communication technologies.

The European Union, through the European Partnership on Smart Networks and Services (SNS JU), has awarded €22 million across five newly selected projects focused on the development of 6G technology. This investment is aimed at accelerating research and transitioning innovations into large-scale trials and real-world applications within the region.

SNS JU, the EU-backed organization advancing 6G, highlighted the critical timing of these initiatives as global competition intensifies in next-generation communication technologies. The funded projects address key challenges and opportunities for 6G networks, including the integration of artificial intelligence and expanding device connectivity beyond traditional smartphones.

The five projects are 6G-AID, Hemes-6G, EUnicon-6G, EU-India-6G-Bridge, and SNS Impact. Notably, 6G-AID focuses on establishing a European database that supports AI-native 6G networks, which is expected to be foundational for future smart communication systems. Hemes-6G plans to unite eight EU testing platforms into a shared infrastructure to facilitate high-scale experimentation and development.

EUnicon-6G aims to identify new opportunities for connected devices, expanding the technological ecosystem beyond current smartphone dependencies. EU-India-6G-Bridge fosters cooperation between European and Indian entities to nurture collaborative progress in 6G. Meanwhile, SNS Impact is designed to enhance cooperation among various related projects to maximize collective benefits.

Erzsebet Fitori, director of SNS JU, emphasized that these initiatives will offer industry stakeholders improved access to essential data, testbeds, technologies, and partnerships. She underlined that this support is vital for transforming 6G research into viable products and services.

From the citizens’ perspective, these projects are expected to lay the groundwork for future connectivity that is more secure, reliable, and capable. Fitori noted that the efforts aim to ensure Europe has a decisive role in shaping the technologies and standards that will define the future of telecommunications.

These projects emerged from SNS JU’s sixth call for proposals, which closed earlier in the year, marking a continued commitment by the European Union to lead in 6G development and innovation.
