Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund aimed at supporting projects for societal good, with the potential to increase this stake as company value grows. The fund targets AI’s social impact, including labor market disruptions.

Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, announced on October 18, 2026, the creation of a Public Benefit Fund designed to further the company’s mission of supporting social good. The company is dedicating 5% of its shares to this fund, which is established as a wholly-owned LLC within Anthropic. This new entity aims to have increased flexibility and scale to fund initiatives beyond what can be pursued within the company itself.

The structure includes provisions whereby Anthropic’s board may allocate an additional 2% of shares to the fund for every 50% increase in the company’s valuation above a set baseline, thereby increasing the public good component in line with company growth. Anthropic emphasized that none of this equity will be used for lobbying or political purposes.

This commitment builds upon prior commitments by Anthropic’s co-founders, who had pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and a company equity donation matching program in which about half the employees participate. Combined, these efforts aim to dedicate approximately 20% of Anthropic’s equity to public benefit causes, with the possibility of more as the company expands.

The Public Benefit Fund intends to support broad societal benefits such as substantial donations to traditional nonprofits and direct distributions to specific populations. One highlighted area is addressing the economic and labor market impacts of AI. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to the Economic Futures Research Fund, supporting ambitious external research on interventions to prepare society for AI-driven economic changes, including job displacement and skills transitions.

The Economic Futures Research Fund focuses on five research priorities: shaping AI’s impact at the workplace level, equipping workers for transitions, modernizing income support for displaced workers, building worker stakes in AI-driven growth, and generating evidence on public investments. It aims to fund large-scale, innovative research projects, pilots, and randomized control trials to inform policies and programs that can help manage AI’s societal impact.

Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei has framed the announcement as part of addressing a broader "crisis of trust" in AI, reflecting public concern and the need for responsible stewardship of AI’s development and deployment. In coming months, Anthropic plans to share detailed information about the governance and operational structure of the Public Benefit Fund and will provide public reports on its mission progress.

With this initiative, Anthropic seeks to demonstrate a model of integrating corporate growth with deliberate, scaled commitments to public good, recognizing that as AI capabilities advance rapidly, equally bold approaches are required to ensure social benefits are realized and challenges mitigated.
