Petra Power designs compact, efficient solid oxide fuel cells that cut fuel costs and emissions, targeting data centers and military vehicle auxiliary power applications with planned deployments by 2028-2029.

As demand for electricity surges, especially driven by energy-intensive AI applications, Petra Power seeks to modernize power sources with its advanced solid oxide fuel cells. Founded in 2017, Petra Power produces ceramic fuel cells that convert fuels like natural gas directly into electricity without combustion, promising higher efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional generators.

The company’s founder, Aaron Goodman, explains that traditional power generation relies on combustion processes involving multiple energy conversion steps that lead to significant losses. In contrast, Petra’s fuel cells extract electrons directly from fuel in a single step, yielding electricity more efficiently while reducing physical footprint due to their compact, lightweight design.

Petra targets two primary markets: data centers and defense. For data centers, the startup is collaborating with infrastructure providers positioned just below the largest hyperscale operators. The goal is initial deployment in 2028 and full-scale production by 2029. Although discussions with hyperscalers are ongoing, no formal agreements are in place yet; these largest consumers represent an ideal future customer base given their massive energy needs.

On the defense side, Petra aims to supply auxiliary power systems for land vehicles, providing electrical power when engines are off to run onboard equipment. While the fuel cells have not yet been installed on live vehicles, government testing is underway, with near $9 million in Defense Department contracts awarded to Petra so far. The company staff is around 15 individuals but growing as development progresses.

Recognized for innovation, Petra Power was selected for TechCrunch's Startup Battlefield 200 in 2026, highlighting promising startups. Their technology represents a potential leap in energy efficiency and cost savings at a time when the tech industry urgently seeks sustainable power solutions.
