Actor Mark Wahlberg endorses responsible AI use in films to enhance production elements and is open to AI replicas preserving his image and career beyond his active years.
At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, actor, director, and investor Mark Wahlberg expressed a progressive stance on the integration of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. While acknowledging Hollywood's divided opinion on AI, Wahlberg emphasized that the technology should be employed to augment, not replace, the core elements of filmmaking, particularly storytelling.
Wahlberg shared plans to use AI to enhance aspects of the upcoming Pete Rose biopic in which he stars, citing examples like improving stadium settings to manage costs effectively. He stressed his opposition to AI-generated scripts replacing real actors but welcomed AI as a tool to boost creative production.
Reflecting on his experience with effects-driven films such as Jurassic Park and The Perfect Storm, Wahlberg noted that while he appreciated groundbreaking visual effects, he values authentic storytelling more than just technological spectacle.
The conversation also touched on the use of AI likenesses, referencing the Creative Artists Agency’s Vault technology, which digitally captures actors' physical and vocal attributes to create AI replicas. Though Wahlberg has not yet used this technology, he expressed openness to the idea. He envisions a future where his children or grandchildren could control his digital likeness to continue his film legacy.
Wahlberg even mentioned his animated series, “Ted,” as an example where an AI version of his likeness might sustain the show for decades if he were unable to perform himself. He hopes such advances will provide audiences with ongoing access to content they desire, preserving aspects of culture and entertainment that might otherwise fade away.
Overall, Wahlberg’s perspective underscores a balanced approach to AI in the entertainment industry — embracing technological enhancements while maintaining human creativity and storytelling at the heart of film and television.
