Efferon, recognized at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, developed Efferon NEO to filter deadly toxins and cytokines from children's blood, aiming to reduce pediatric sepsis fatalities globally.

Sepsis, a dangerous immune response to infection, remains a leading cause of death in children under five, with approximately three million young lives lost annually. Efferon, a startup highlighted among TechCrunch Disrupt 2026’s Startup Battlefield 200, is targeting this critical health challenge with innovative blood-purification technology designed specifically for pediatric patients.

Sepsis triggers an overwhelming immune reaction that damages organs and can lead to rapid deterioration. Standard treatments like antibiotics sometimes fail to control this response, necessitating methods to filter harmful substances directly from the blood. Efferon has developed a device capable of simultaneously absorbing endotoxins—considered the "flames" of the immune fire—and cytokines, the "smoke" that exacerbates inflammation.

While Efferon produces absorbers for adults, its breakthrough pediatric device, Efferon NEO, is engineered to accommodate the lower circulating blood volume in children, addressing the unique physiological requirements of young patients. This makes Efferon NEO the first multimodal blood purification device specifically designed for pediatric sepsis.

The device received the CE mark in April 2026, signifying regulatory approval in Europe. It is currently utilized in intensive care units across 30 countries, including hospitals in Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. The company is preparing FDA submissions for approval in the United States and anticipates reaching $2 million in annualized revenue by the end of 2026.

Efferon's technology originated from research at Moscow State University, with co-founder Ivan Bessonov contributing to its development. Entrepreneur Dima Romashin joined as CEO earlier in 2026 to guide the startup’s commercialization efforts. While the company’s growth pace differs from rapid-scaling AI startups, its mission prioritizes saving children's lives through effective medical innovation.

Efferon's advancement marks a significant step toward reducing pediatric sepsis mortality by offering targeted, physiological-appropriate treatment options that rapidly reduce toxic blood components and support patient recovery.
