Danu Robotics is launching H.E.R.O., an AI-powered robot designed to sort recyclable waste faster and more affordably, aiming to disrupt the $20 billion recycling sorting market in Europe and North America.
Danu Robotics, founded by Amy Ma and based in Edinburgh, Scotland, is introducing an innovative robot to tackle inefficiencies in recycling waste sorting. Ma’s inspiration came from observing that even well-funded office buildings often fail to recycle correctly, with all bins emptied into the trash. Recognizing the broader challenge, she set out six years ago to create a more effective technological solution.
The company's product, named H.E.R.O., distinguishes itself from competitors by using a pincer claw for item pickup instead of the more common suction system. More importantly, it integrates artificial intelligence that continually improves its sorting capabilities, enhancing accuracy and efficiency over time.
Danu’s business model capitalizes on the economics of recycling centers, which profit from the material they recover. This creates a direct incentive for investment in effective sorting technology. Ma estimates that a facility equipped with H.E.R.O. can generate approximately $485,000 in additional revenue annually, compared with $160,000 in upfront costs and $24,000 per year in maintenance—figures that favorably compare to existing robotic solutions like those from Glacier and RecycleEye.
The company has secured $5 million in late-seed funding to advance product development and commercialization. It already holds $500,000 in contracts and has letters of interest from two major customers, with over 200 other potential clients in its pipeline, aiming at the substantial $20 billion market across Europe and North America.
Looking ahead, Danu Robotics plans to enhance H.E.R.O.’s design to make it sturdier, smaller, and more versatile. This miniaturization will allow deployment in non-industrial settings such as events, shopping centers, hospitals, and airports, enabling waste sorting at the source and potentially transforming packaging waste management.
Danu Robotics is showcasing its technology at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield 200 in October 2026, signaling its readiness to scale and impact the recycling industry significantly.
