South Korea's KT stops new 3G sign-ups and device changes due to aging infrastructure, encouraging users to switch to LTE or 5G, following SK Telecom's earlier move.
Korea Telecom (KT) has announced it will cease new subscriptions for 3G services starting November 2, 2026, marking a key step towards retiring 3G technology nearly 23 years after its initial commercial launch in South Korea. This follows a similar decision by rival SK Telecom (SKT) in August of the same year to halt new 3G subscriber additions.
KT cited aging 3G equipment impacting its ability to maintain stable communications as the primary reason for this move. The operator is encouraging existing 3G users to transition to more advanced networks such as LTE or 5G, which offer improved performance and capabilities.
From November 2 onward, KT will stop accepting new 3G sign-ups, number transfers, and device changes involving 3G phones or LTE phones lacking HD voice support. While 3G services will continue for current users to avoid service disruption, KT plans to announce a final termination date only after securing government approval.
To facilitate the transition, KT is providing multiple upgrade incentives, including free device replacements and discounts on bills for up to 24 months. Customers wishing to cancel their 3G service and switch providers may also receive support payments as part of the exit process.
As of March 2026, KT reported approximately 68,000 3G subscribers, representing just 0.5% of its overall subscriber base, indicating a significant migration toward newer network technologies over recent years.
This development reflects the broader industry trend in South Korea of phasing out legacy 3G networks to reallocate spectrum and resources to faster and more efficient mobile technologies.
