u-blox unveils the Alma-W1 Wi-Fi module, designed for power- and size-sensitive IoT applications with support for Wi-Fi 6/6E, Bluetooth LE, and AI edge processing.

Swiss company u-blox, known for its positioning and short-range communication technologies, has introduced the Alma-W1 range of Wi-Fi modules aimed at IoT devices where power consumption and size are critical constraints. Responding to growing market demand, the new module supports Wi-Fi 6 and 6E standards alongside Bluetooth Low Energy and IEEE 802.15.4 radios, providing versatile connectivity options in a compact form factor.

The Alma-W1 modules are built around Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF7120 and nRF7120E system-on-chips (SoCs), leveraging multiple configuration choices to suit various application needs. A notable feature is the inclusion of a neural processing unit (NPU) that facilitates on-device AI processing with reduced latency, reflecting u-blox's focus on enabling intelligent edge computing.

Target sectors include healthcare, smart home systems, industrial automation, robotics, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), all of which benefit from reliable low-power wireless communication. Nordic Semiconductor’s Wi-Fi business unit EVP, Kjetil Holstad, emphasized the importance of battery life in expanding Wi-Fi adoption for IoT, describing u-blox’s efforts as advancing simplification of deployments in energy-constrained devices.

Currently, u-blox is distributing initial samples to select customers and plans to broaden availability as part of its rollout strategy. The Alma-W1 module represents a strategic move to meet the evolving needs of IoT developers seeking modular, energy-efficient, and multi-protocol wireless solutions.
