GSMA introduces policy guidelines to bolster mobile network infrastructure resilience as climate-induced damage costs could rise beyond $3 billion annually by 2050.

The GSM Association (GSMA) has announced a set of new policy principles aimed at strengthening the resilience of mobile networks in the face of escalating climate-related threats. The initiative responds to research findings that highlight the financial and societal impact of severe weather events on telecommunications infrastructure.

Currently, mobile network operators incur approximately $1.7 billion each year in repair and replacement costs attributed to damage from storms and flooding. Projections indicate that by 2050, these costs could nearly double, exceeding $3 billion annually if no significant action is taken.

GSMA emphasizes the urgency of coordinated, investment-friendly policies to protect critical connectivity services. The association's policy principles focus on encouraging collaboration between governments, regulators, and industry stakeholders to ensure that mobile networks can withstand and recover swiftly from climate-induced disruptions.

These guidelines seek to address vulnerabilities in cell-site infrastructure, promote climate-resilient design and maintenance practices, and support adequate funding mechanisms for adaptation and recovery efforts.

As mobile connectivity becomes increasingly essential for social and economic activities, protecting network stability against environmental risks is critical. GSMA's new framework aims to guide international and local policymakers in creating supportive regulatory environments that incentivize resilience investments.

While the policy principles set a strong foundation, their effectiveness will depend on widespread adoption and implementation across diverse markets with varying exposure to climate impacts.

The GSMA's announcement highlights the growing recognition within the telecom sector of climate risks and the need for proactive strategies to safeguard network infrastructure vital to global connectivity.
