Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges acknowledges SpaceX's Starlink Mobile could disrupt US mobile industry but says at least $200 billion is required to build comparable network infrastructure to T-Mobile's scale.
SpaceX's ambitious plan to launch Starlink Mobile as a major wireless carrier in the United States faces significant financial and operational hurdles, according to Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges, whose company owns T-Mobile. Höttges cautioned during an earnings call that while he takes SpaceX’s endeavor "super serious," the cost to build a competitive mobile network would likely exceed $200 billion.
Höttges pointed out that Elon Musk’s Starlink Mobile has acquired 76 megahertz of wireless spectrum, far less than Deutsche Telekom’s 400 megahertz portfolio. To reach a comparable spectrum position, Musk would require enormous capital investment, potentially in the triple-digit billions. Additionally, constructing the physical network remains a massive undertaking: T-Mobile currently operates approximately 85,000 cell towers, and while SpaceX could rent existing towers, building or upgrading infrastructure with antennas could add another $20 to $30 billion in expenses.
Despite these challenges, Höttges acknowledged Starlink Mobile’s innovative approach, which will combine direct-to-cell satellite technology with terrestrial networks. Recent reports highlight SpaceX’s plans to utilize up to 80,000 cell towers across the US and possibly acquire Boost Mobile to accelerate market entry. Qualcomm has also announced a partnership providing cellular infrastructure technology for Starlink Mobile’s rollout.
The Deutsche Telekom CEO emphasized that Musk’s move represents more than just network construction. Musk’s ownership of chipsets, data centers, AI capabilities, and satellites positions Starlink Mobile to potentially redefine communication services by integrating modern technologies like social media or AI agents directly into the service.
Höttges drew parallels with the automotive industry’s disruption by Tesla, advising established telecom operators not to underestimate the threat despite the enormous resources required. "If [Musk] has the money, go for it," Höttges said, but underscored that creating a "professionalized" carrier with extensive coverage and capacity is a formidable endeavor.
As Starlink Mobile progresses, it could introduce a novel wireless service model, challenging the traditional dominance of carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T. Nevertheless, Höttges’ remarks highlight the steep financial and operational mountain SpaceX must climb to realize that vision.
