Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis discusses the band's laid-back approach to making new music, his preferences in guitar gear, his cautious stance on AI in music, and the enduring appeal of the band's loud live performances.

J Mascis, frontman of the alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr., remains a defining figure decades into his career, known both for his distinctive guitar style and his understated demeanor. In a recent interview with The Verge, Mascis reflected on the band's creative process, gear choices, attitudes towards emerging music technology, and valued live show experience.

Over 40 years since Dinosaur Jr.'s formation, Mascis credits the band's longevity to a simple reason: “I guess we have nothing better to do.” This offhand remark reflects their relaxed approach to music-making. For their new album, "There Near," Mascis explained that the band avoided intensive studio marathons or detailed remote collaborations typical in modern music production. Instead, they worked quickly, with Mascis bringing prepared demos and the band recording immediately—even as members were still learning their parts—hoping the performance would come together naturally.

This same casual attitude extends to Mascis' choice of equipment. While he is a "tube purist," appreciating the sound of tube amplifiers, he acknowledges their inconvenience and uses what works best. Despite embracing analog warmth and mastering to tape, he also incorporates digital tools like Pro Tools for tracking. When working with Fender on signature guitars, Mascis prioritizes simplicity and affordability, focusing primarily on the neck quality, jumbo frets, and playability, leaving other components customizable for players.

Mascis also addressed some controversy around his experimental use of generative AI. Two years ago, he released a video made with AI for his solo track "Old Friends". He described the decision as casual, admitting the process was led by an assistant who used the technology because it looked interesting. While he personally doubts AI has a place in music creation, he recognizes the technology’s unavoidable presence and suggests society is still learning to adapt, hoping it will not have destructive outcomes.

Despite his relaxed attitude towards technology and interviews, Mascis expressed strong views on live music, a cornerstone of Dinosaur Jr.'s identity. Known for their infamously loud shows, Mascis pointed out an audience craving "something kind of reality-based," emphasizing the band's reliance on traditional amps and live sound dynamics rather than modern in-ear monitors or click tracks. He criticized contemporary sound engineering for creating live sound artificially rather than capturing the genuine performance, underscoring his belief in the visceral power of unmediated live music.

Currently touring the United States to support "There Near," Dinosaur Jr. continues to embody a blend of veteran musicianship and straightforward rock ethos. Mascis’ candid insights reveal a focus on authenticity and simplicity in a music landscape often dominated by complexity and high technology.
