Elon Musk unveiled plans for Terafab, a major chip manufacturing facility, while admitting unfamiliarity with semiconductor production. He also described experiencing intense AI-related psychological episodes.
Elon Musk has revealed ambitious plans to launch Terafab, a large-scale semiconductor fabrication plant, despite candidly admitting he currently lacks the technical know-how to manufacture chips. Speaking with members of the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley community, Musk outlined his vision for the factory and shared insights on artificial intelligence developments.
Musk acknowledged his limited experience with chip production, stating, "I still have a lot to learn in semiconductor manufacturing. To be clear, I don't know how to make chips." He explained that Terafab will initially operate using standard manufacturing equipment, which will then be progressively upgraded to improve throughput. Eventually, specialized high-speed equipment will be introduced to address production bottlenecks.
A distinctive aspect of Musk’s plan involves integrating all major stages of semiconductor production—photomask fabrication, crystal growth, and chip packaging—within a single facility. He believes this approach could accelerate technological advancements but conceded that full project realization may take several years.
Comparing existing industry players, Musk noted that manufacturing tools at TSMC, Samsung, and Intel appear very similar, which motivates his interest in developing proprietary technologies. However, he did not provide a timeline for creating such specialized equipment.
Beyond hardware, Musk touched on generative AI, referencing music videos produced by multiple interacting neural networks that impressed him with their quality and emotional impact. He disclosed experiencing what he metaphorically termed "AI psychosis" multiple times in 2026, describing it as intense psychological episodes triggered by AI or superintelligence developments.
Musk emphasized the critical role of high-quality data in training neural networks and warned that inaccurate or contradictory foundational information could lead to unpredictable AI behavior.
While the Terafab project remains in early stages with many challenges ahead, Musk’s dual focus on chip manufacturing innovation and AI advancement highlights his ongoing commitment to frontier technologies.
