Elon Musk reveals plans for Starship's 15th test flight within 4-6 weeks, aiming to catch the returning vehicle using Mechazilla tower manipulators, marking a milestone in reusable spacecraft recovery.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has provided new insights into the upcoming 15th test flight of the Starship spacecraft, revealing ambitious plans to attempt catching the vehicle mid-descent using the launch tower's mechanical arms, nicknamed Mechazilla. This initiative, if successful, would represent the first time SpaceX recovers an orbit-capable Starship by physically catching it rather than relying solely on powered landings or ocean splashdowns.
Musk discussed the results of the 14th Starship test flight, noting that an engine failure experienced during that mission did not present a serious issue. He also praised the thermal protection system, highlighting its strong performance during the spacecraft's passage through the dense layers of Earth's atmosphere.
The 15th flight is tentatively scheduled for four to six weeks after Musk's announcement. The critical objective is to use Mechazilla — a specialized launch tower equipped with robotic arms — to capture the Starship's upper stage during descent. Successfully catching the spacecraft would enable significant cost savings by facilitating rapid refurbishment and turnaround between flights.
This method of recovery aims to streamline the process for future missions, as physically securing the vehicle upon re-entry minimizes damage risks associated with landing impacts or sea recoveries. Nevertheless, Musk emphasized that the timeline remains provisional and subject to change based on ongoing ground tests and regulatory approvals.
Meanwhile, at SpaceX's Texas test facility near Massey, a new Starship prototype is undergoing cryogenic fuel system testing in preparation for future flights. These evaluations are critical to ensuring vehicle integrity and performance during launch and re-entry phases.
The push toward reusable spacecraft remains a key element of SpaceX's strategy to reduce the cost and increase the cadence of orbital launches. Mechazilla's successful deployment could mark a transformative step in the spaceflight industry by enabling rapid, reliable recovery and reuse of large orbital vehicles like Starship.
