Jason Jones, known for Halo and Destiny, penned a sprawling AI takeover novel evolving into a multi-format worldbuilding studio Stone Kite, launching graphic novels and serialized chapters to deepen the story across media.
Jason Jones, co-creator of the science fiction gaming series Halo and Destiny, has expanded his storytelling into a new sci-fi universe centered on an AI uprising. Originally writing a manuscript presented to author Margaret Stohl in 2019, Jones crafted an extensive oral history depicting the global impact of artificial intelligence through around 100 characters across 40 countries. This epic scope soon evolved beyond a single book concept.
Together with Stohl, Jones co-founded Stone Kite, a worldbuilding studio uniting diverse talents—including comic artists and screenwriters—in a flexible, platform-agnostic approach. The studio currently employs 22 in-house staff and collaborates with over 250 contributors to develop the narrative across multiple formats. Their goal is to create a story ecosystem designed to adapt from comics and books to potential future films and games.
Stone Kite debuted the first chapter of a four-part graphic novel titled One Zero One, alongside releasing a chapter from Jones’ original AI uprising manuscript. This specific excerpt, an immersive airsoft battle between humans and AI bots in Moscow suburbs, reveals early thematic elements illustrating AI-human conflict and the blurring of lines between machines and people.
The studio emphasizes a dynamic storytelling process informed by audience and collaborator feedback, aiming to refine the saga based on real-time reactions. This iterative method marks a deliberate shift in narrative design to honor diverse media conventions while maintaining a coherent world.
Stohl noted the relevance of the AI theme amid contemporary technological developments, drawing parallels between fictional agentic machine behaviors and current AI advancements. The project’s unfolding in serialized and graphic forms allows for accelerated engagement, setting the stage for broader multimedia expansions.
Though it remains uncertain whether the original manuscript will be published as a standalone book, Stone Kite’s work represents a novel attempt to build a richly layered sci-fi universe through cooperative creation and cross-format storytelling, spearheaded by a veteran of some of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
