McKinsey & Company will test an AI-driven client simulation in interviews for entry-level business analyst candidates in North America. The AI tool presents realistic client scenarios, assessed by human interviewers to better gauge candidates' responses.
Consulting firm McKinsey & Company is incorporating an artificial intelligence simulation into the interview process for some entry-level roles, The Wall Street Journal reports, as detailed by The Verge. This new AI tool simulates a client with whom candidates must engage in a 10-minute conversation. The simulation is designed to represent approximately 80% of the situations McKinsey consultants typically encounter in their daily consulting work. The goal is to create realistic scenarios that test candidates' skills and interactions without the simulation portraying overly erratic or unreasonable client behavior.
Importantly, while candidates interact directly with the AI simulation, the evaluation of their performance is conducted by human assessors present during the interview. These human interviewers observe how applicants manage and respond to the simulated client situations. This hybrid approach aims to combine the consistency and scenario diversity offered by AI with the nuanced judgment of human evaluators.
Starting this fall, McKinsey plans to pilot this AI tool in some North American offices for undergraduate applicants applying to business analyst positions. The program expects to involve hundreds of candidates during the testing phase. This initiative reflects a broader trend of companies integrating AI-based avatars and simulations into recruitment processes, enabling more dynamic and interactive candidate assessments.
McKinsey’s adoption of the AI client simulation highlights the firm’s interest in exploring AI applications to refine hiring approaches, providing candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their professional problem-solving and interpersonal skills in a controlled yet realistic environment. While unconfirmed, this trial may inform future scaling of AI integration in consulting recruitment if successful. Other enterprises have also begun experimenting with AI interviewers, signifying growing industry acceptance of AI-enhanced human resources tools.
