More than 200 packages containing graded trading cards valued at over $963,000 were stolen from a FedEx truck outside PSA's headquarters, with investigations ongoing and collectors being notified and compensated.
Last week, over 200 packages containing graded Pokémon and sports trading cards were stolen from a FedEx truck parked outside the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) headquarters in Santa Ana, California. PSA, one of the world’s largest third-party grading companies for sports and hobby cards, reported the theft to the Santa Ana Police Department. The stolen items are estimated to be worth over $963,000, with the total valuation potentially increasing as PSA continues to identify the missing cards.
Collectors Holdings, PSA’s parent company, has acknowledged the incident and is cooperating closely with law enforcement authorities and FedEx while the investigation proceeds. The company has alerted marketplace partners to be vigilant of potentially resold rare and serialized cards taken in the theft. To limit unauthorized resale, PSA has deactivated the unique certification numbers assigned to all identified stolen cards.
Affected customers have been contacted by Collectors Holdings to arrange compensation based on the fair market value of their lost collectibles, up to the insured amount each customer selected before grading. For example, YouTuber Sky-B Cards, a victim of the theft, had submitted 104 collectible sports cards for grading, valued at $8,468 with an insurance coverage of $156,000. It remains unclear what compensation they have received so far.
In light of the theft, the collector community has mobilized with some reaching out to YouTuber Boston Card Hunter, who is compiling a detailed list of stolen serialized cards to aid owners and buyers in identifying the missing collectibles. This collaborative effort aims to prevent the stolen cards from entering the secondary market unnoticed.
This crime highlights the growing value and risks associated with collectible trading cards, especially those professionally graded and certified. With the investigation ongoing, PSA and Collectors Holdings remain committed to supporting victims and assisting authorities in recovering the stolen merchandise.
