Meta revealed its operating income would have reached $22.89 billion in Q3 2026 without paying nearly $10 billion for a child safety lawsuit settlement, according to its recent earnings report.
Meta Platforms disclosed in its third-quarter 2026 earnings report that its income from operations would have been $22.89 billion if it had not been required to pay $9.89 billion as part of a nationwide child safety settlement. This settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging the company’s social media platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive to children.
The total settlement agreed in August amounts to $17.1 billion, but Meta’s portion is $9.89 billion. The settlement terms also include contingencies where Meta’s payout could be reduced to $5.3 billion if competitors like YouTube and TikTok implement stricter protections for children, which Meta agreed to as part of the deal.
Despite these significant charges, Meta reported total costs and expenses of $51.61 billion and generated revenue of $64.60 billion, a 26 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This indicates strong underlying business performance amid ongoing legal challenges.
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the company’s progress in emerging technologies, stating they reached “major milestones” toward developing personal superintelligence products. He emphasized that investments are yielding results and the core business remains robust with growth across multiple areas.
Meta also faces further legal pressures, as a New Mexico court recently ordered a $25 billion penalty related to the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, potentially increasing the company’s litigation expenses in the future.
Overall, while Meta’s financial report underscores the impact of legal settlements on profitability, it also reflects solid revenue growth and ongoing investments in next-generation technology capabilities within the company’s diverse portfolio.
