Nvidia is reportedly negotiating to guarantee billions in debt for Nscale’s planned AI data center, backing huge construction costs as investor concerns grow over AI infrastructure spending.
Nvidia is in discussions to co-sign billions of dollars in debt financing for Nscale’s upcoming AI data center campus in West Virginia, according to reports from The Information and Bloomberg. This potential move would mark a significant step beyond Nvidia’s usual support—previously focused on leasing arrangements and chip sales—by shouldering financial risk tied to construction costs for a major AI infrastructure project.
Nscale plans to build a sprawling AI campus in West Virginia, anchored by a $44.6 billion contract with Anthropic, an AI cloud provider and major Nvidia customer, for the first 460-megawatt building. Nvidia’s involvement in guaranteeing project loans, known as a residual value guarantee, would mean that if Nscale defaulted on payments, Nvidia could temporarily take possession of the facility and help find new buyers or tenants. This financial backing aims to help secure funding for electricity and construction costs that are crucial for Nscale’s buildout.
This arrangement comes at a time when investor enthusiasm for large AI infrastructure projects is cooling. Several neocloud providers have experienced steep drops in share prices amid fears about the sustainability of aggressive capital expenditure in AI computing. Nscale itself is pursuing an initial public offering valuing it up to $35 billion but faces skepticism about its ability to execute ambitious data center expansions.
The West Virginia project has faced challenges, including environmental setbacks such as runoff flooding nearby properties, which delayed state certification until September. Meanwhile, Microsoft withdrew from plans to collaborate with Nscale on an English site due to power grid issues that pushed timelines into the late 2030s.
Nvidia’s financial commitment to neoclouds and large AI customers collectively exceeds $170 billion, including $1 billion in convertible financing recently provided to Nscale. Nvidia’s deepening relationship with Nscale is seen as a strategic effort to secure a major customer for its next-generation Vera Rubin AI chips—expected to power the West Virginia campus.
Anthropic, which has diversified its AI infrastructure spending across multiple chipmakers, is also confronting financing challenges of its own as it filed to go public amidst warnings from Blackstone of a possible below-investment-grade credit rating. Such circumstances underscore the complexities of scaling AI infrastructure in a cautious investment climate.
Nvidia’s potential role as cosigner reflects both the stakes and uncertainties in expanding AI data center capacity. By backing Nscale’s financing, Nvidia may help stabilize a key customer’s ambitious project while simultaneously exposing itself to greater financial risk in the rapidly evolving AI hardware ecosystem.
