Reddit will soon require all users to log in to browse its content, aiming to reduce scraping and unauthorized data access while enhancing advertising relevance and user experience.

Reddit announced a significant policy shift that will require all users to log in to access its content. Previously, users could freely browse Reddit without an account, making the platform a valuable source of crowdsourced information on countless topics. However, this open access has attracted automated scraping and unauthorized usage, prompting Reddit to take action.

CEO Steve Huffman revealed that the login requirement would be tested initially in select international markets outside the US in the coming months. The company plans to evaluate the impact on user experience, business metrics, and the ecosystem before deciding on broader deployment. Details on how content will appear to logged-out users after the change are not yet clear.

This move aims to protect Reddit’s data more effectively and improve the advertising business. Huffman stated that most unauthorized access happens through logged-out browsing. By requiring login, Reddit intends to better control access while still licensing data to partners like OpenAI and Google under existing agreements.

Interestingly, Reddit does not seek to identify logged-in users personally but simply to confirm their logged-in status. More logged-in users will enable Reddit to show more relevant advertisements, a crucial revenue stream since over 80% of monetization comes from logged-in user activity, primarily via the app.

This policy change comes alongside Reddit’s Q3 2026 earnings release, which noted a meaningful decline in search traffic and referrals, particularly from logged-out and web sources. The company views the transition to mandatory login as necessary for its platform integrity and business sustainability, despite the significant departure from two decades of open access.

In addition, Reddit has rebuilt and is reintroducing the app’s incognito mode to offer some level of private browsing while logged in. Overall, this move marks a major adjustment in how Reddit balances openness with security and monetization.
