Top tech experts at TechCrunch Disrupt advise startups to focus on repeatable customer acquisition and true product-market fit instead of early rapid sales to ensure sustainable growth.
At the 2026 TechCrunch Disrupt conference, prominent technology figures shared insights on what drives sustainable startup growth in today's fast-paced AI-driven market. Luke Arno of Lovable, Ben Broca of AI platform Polsia, and investor Tomasz Tunguz of Theory Ventures emphasized the critical importance of achieving repeatable customer acquisition through a solid understanding of product-market fit rather than relying on early bursts of sales.
Ben Broca highlighted the challenge of finding genuine product-market fit, especially as AI-enabled products rapidly proliferate and can be easily replicated. He stressed the importance of community-building and sustained customer engagement, urging founders to maintain direct communication with clients to understand their needs beyond initial hype.
Luke Arno explained that startups often mistake early fast revenue as a sign they are ready to scale. Instead, he advocates for cultivating "learning density" and pattern recognition — identifying where and how customers can be consistently reached and served. According to Arno, attracting new customers via varied, unsystematic strategies indicates a lack of scalable product-market fit. Scaling should come only once a startup can reliably generate new customers through similar approaches that solve comparable problems.
Lovable, renowned for its rapid growth and now valued over $13 billion, exemplifies these principles. Its achievement of more than $600 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and $700 million raised underscores the heightened expectations in the current ecosystem. Tomasz Tunguz acknowledged this pressure and credited the influx of larger-scale investments for accelerating growth tempos since 2008.
However, Tunguz cautioned that such explosive growth remains exceptional. The sustainable winners will be those startups that deeply understand their customers' long-term needs and deliver value that endures beyond initial excitement. The collective advice from these leaders points to a disciplined, customer-focused go-to-market approach during a startup’s formative 90 days, laying a foundation for lasting success rather than transient sales spikes.
