Flapping Airplanes, a year-old AI lab focused on more data-efficient training techniques, raised a $1 billion Series A led by Index and Lux, marking a valuation increase to $6 billion.
Flapping Airplanes, an AI startup just one year into its journey, has attracted significant attention in Silicon Valley with its innovative approach to artificial intelligence. The company recently closed a $1 billion Series A financing round, co-led by prominent venture capital firms Index Ventures and Lux Capital, bringing its valuation to an impressive $6 billion. This new round follows a $180 million seed funding raised less than a year earlier, which had valued the company at $1.5 billion.
The startup was founded by Aidan Smith alongside brothers Asher and Ben Spector. Smith is a former Neuralink employee and Thiel fellow, while Asher and Ben Spector are Stanford PhD graduates in statistics and computer science, respectively. Ben also founded Prod, a student-run startup accelerator considered influential in Silicon Valley talent development.
Flapping Airplanes' core technology revolves around what the founders describe as a 'megakernel framework' capable of performing multiple tasks—such as model training, inference serving, and playing video games—simultaneously on a single GPU kernel. This design aims to maximize GPU utilization by overlapping compute-intensive and memory-bound tasks, which they contend unlocks untapped AI performance potential.
A key mission for the startup is to develop AI models that require significantly less data, eschewing the conventional reliance on vast internet-scale datasets. The founders believe this approach can dramatically reduce training and operational costs, making AI models more accessible and easier to deploy economically. Asher Spector expressed to TechCrunch that achieving "a model that’s a million times more data efficient is probably a million times easier to put into the economy."
Backers in the recent round include returning investors like Sequoia, GV, and Kleiner Perkins, along with new participants such as Valor, Atreides, A*, and Nvidia. With this substantial capital infusion, Flapping Airplanes plans to scale its team and further pursue its vision of transforming AI training efficiency.
This funding milestone highlights growing investor confidence in next-generation AI research that challenges current paradigms reliant on massive data consumption. While full details of Flapping Airplanes' proprietary technology remain closely held, the company positions itself as a disruptive 'young person’s AGI lab' striving to redefine modern AI development.
