Rivian's CEO RJ Scaringe foresees that autonomous driving technology will lead to fundamentally different vehicle designs, moving beyond current SUVs and trucks to new forms for personally owned autonomous cars, exemplified by a forthcoming R4 model.

Rivian is actively advancing its autonomous vehicle software for electric vehicles, with CEO RJ Scaringe expressing strong enthusiasm about how autonomy will inspire greatly altered vehicle designs. Speaking with TechCrunch at TechCrunch Disrupt, Scaringe predicted that moving past present models (dubbed R2 and R3) will unlock creative design possibilities for personally owned autonomous vehicles, facilitating new user experiences.

Nearly a decade ago, many automakers and autonomous vehicle developers anticipated a revolution in vehicle shapes and functions, spurred by the combination of autonomous driving and electric powertrains. Concepts ranged from pod-like cars to mobile living spaces and even multi-legged vehicles. However, these visions largely remained conceptual because autonomous technology matured slower than expected and automakers faced challenges in mass-producing radically different vehicles.

Now, with robotaxis operating on public roads in multiple cities and substantial strides in autonomous driving software and EV manufacturing at scale, this design vision may become reality. Rivian continues to focus on scaling production of the R2 SUV as part of its path to profitability, while evolving its autonomy software from driver-assist features to planned point-to-point navigation without intervention under supervision, aiming for full autonomy in future robotaxi services integrated with Uber.

Despite these efforts, Scaringe expects that the majority of miles driven in the U.S. will remain in personally owned vehicles, even with high-level autonomous capabilities. He estimates that between 80% to 95% of driving will continue in household-owned cars for various practical and psychological reasons.

This conviction fuels Rivian's anticipation of designing fully autonomous vehicles tailored for personal ownership, distinct from today's models. The next generation, referred to as R4, remains undisclosed in appearance or detailed features, but Scaringe promises it will be "cool" and "great," signalling a departure from current SUV and truck formats towards innovative designs enabled by autonomy's flexibility.

Rivian's approach showcases a longer-term vision where autonomy not only adds convenience and safety but also enables a new era of vehicle form factors that redefine transportation experiences for individual owners over the coming decade.
