AI chip startup Tenstorrent secured $1.5 billion funding at a $6.2 billion valuation to expand production of chips optimized for open-weight AI models and video generation, choosing independence amid acquisition interest from major industry players.

Tenstorrent, a decade-old startup specializing in AI inference chips, recently announced a significant funding round of $1.5 billion that doubled its valuation to $6.2 billion. This surge in valuation and capital comes shortly after reported acquisition interests from major semiconductor companies Intel and Qualcomm, which had valued the startup at up to $5 billion earlier this year.

The latest funding round was spearheaded by Trace Capital, a new investment firm founded by Ben Mahdavi of Quiet Capital, alongside Innovation X. Other investors include well-known entities such as Cadence Ventures, Eclipse, Fidelity, SanDisk, and T. Rowe Price.

Tenstorrent’s CEO, Jim Keller, a respected microprocessor engineer, shared with Bloomberg that the company opted to maintain its independence rather than accept acquisition offers. The decision was influenced by their success demonstrating that Tenstorrent’s Galaxy servers effectively run DeepSeek AI models, underscoring the company's technological potential.

The newly raised funds will be directed toward scaling the production and development of specialized chips tailored for serving open-weight AI models and applications in video generation, positioning Tenstorrent as a competitive alternative to the currently dominant Nvidia.

Tenstorrent’s raising and strategy align with a broader trend of AI hardware startups challenging Nvidia's market leadership. For instance, another company, Etched, has been attracting investment interest at valuations exceeding $40 billion. These developments highlight increasing investor confidence and intensifying competition in the AI chip sector, with a focus on custom hardware optimized for emerging AI workloads.

By focusing on open-weight models, Tenstorrent addresses a niche that supports AI frameworks requiring flexible, scalable hardware capable of efficient handling of diverse model architectures. The investment will enable the company to expand its manufacturing and R&D efforts, aiming to capture a larger portion of the growing AI inference market.

This round of funding and strategic direction underscores a pivotal moment for AI chip startups seeking to innovate beyond established players and meet the surging demand for specialized AI acceleration hardware.
